I came to literary translation as a linguist. Linguistic analysis prepared me well for understanding the Zapotec: as linguists we examine words down to their smallest parts. In linguistic translation we value representing grammatical aspects of the original language in the translation such as argument structure and word order. I bring this training with me to literary translation while also embracing the artistic opportunities inherent in the work. Translating threatened languages carries with it additional responsibility and potential for activism and advocacy.
