- Fieldwork on Mesoamerican languages (especially Zapotec) and American Indian languages: documentary and descriptive linguistics, archiving, developing pedagogical language materials, and lexicography
- Syntax, semantics, morphology, grammaticalization, language change, word order, focus, and case marking
- Language and space, locative systems, and prepositions
- Colonial Valley Zapotec: morphological and syntactic analysis of 16th- 18th century documents, written in Zapotec
